The ACT Road Safety Fund was established in July 2015 to fund projects and initiatives related to road safety research and education and road trauma prevention, in support of the Government’s road safety strategy.
The Fund’s terms of reference [PDF 77KB] provides that the Fund will conduct an annual grants program and will provide funding to:
The Advisory Board will provide advice and recommendations to the Minister for Justice on the distribution of funds, including the allocation of grant funding made by the Fund. It’s functions include undertaking a grants round for road safety initiatives at least once a year, and providing support, advice and recommendations based on expert advice and assess allocation of grant funding to road safety organisations and projects.
The following members of the Board have been appointed by the Minister for Justice, for a period of three years:
Chair: Deputy Director-General for the Justice and Community Safety Directorate;
Road Safety Expert: Eric Chalmers, Kidsafe ACT CEO and Chair of the ACT & Region Chapter of the Australasian College of Road Safety;
Road Safety Expert: Station Sergeant Susan Ball, Officer-in-Charge of ACT Policing Traffic Operations;
Road user representative: Dr Roderick Katz, road safety and active travel consultant;
Road user representative: Jennifer Woods, President of Motorcycle Riders Association ACT;
Road user representative: Ron Collins, Corporate Affairs and Regional Policy Specialist for NRMA Motoring and Services;
CTP Insurer representative: Naomi Graham, Senior Manager of Personal Injury and Road Safety for IAG Limited; and
CTP Insurer representative: Surayez Rahman, Manager CTP performance for the ACT for AAI Limited.
Each member is appointed for a three year term and the positions are not remunerated.
The 2018 ACT Road Safety Fund Grants program was opened on 9 April by Minister for Road Safety Shane Rattenbury.
Applications for this year close on 23 May 2018. Applications can be lodged through an online application form.

This project will use GPS information to identify high risk areas of extreme braking and acceleration in the ACT road network, which can inform decisions about future road treatments for areas of concern.

This project will deliver four one day “RYDA road safety education” workshops to approximately 600 year 11 ACT students. This program focuses on cognition development and increasing social competency and resilience.

Stay Upright Rider Training
Training area to on road transition for novice motorcyclists
This project will provide a half-day, on-road training for new riders, after they achieve their L-plates, aiming to increase their skills and ultimately reduce the number of motorcyclists in road trauma.

Road safety support brochures

This project will develop a suite of brochures including information on child restraints, low speed run-overs and cycling safety, for distribution online and via social media.
