Law Week 2024

The ACT Courts and Tribunal is throwing open its doors during Law Week 2024 to promote further understanding of the law, the Courts, and its role in society.

Law Week is a national event and this year in the ACT, will be celebrated from 20 to 25 May 2024.

ACT Courts and Tribunal has organised several events on Monday 20 May to provide information on how the ACT justice system works, and raise awareness of the services available to help people navigate that system.

The legal services sector across Canberra provides a huge range of services to the Canberra community. From Legal Aid ACT and the Community Legal Centres providing free legal advice, to Victim Support ACT providing counselling and support, and ACT Corrective Services supporting detainees, these critical services make a real difference to how people engage with the justice system.

On Monday 20 May the ACT Courts are hosting the following events:

  • ‘You be the Judge’ event, where you get to be the judge in a simulated bail hearing. What is bail, and how and why are people given or denied it? Come along and learn how a judicial officer makes a life-changing decision. Would you come to the same conclusion? This interactive program has been created so people can learn in an engaging and educational format. ‘You be the Judge’ will commence at 1pm. If you would like to register your participation, please email CourtsCommunications@courts.act.gov.au.
  • An exhibition of local justice organisations to showcase how they support the local community. Visitors can find out more about the services of Community Legal Centres, Legal Aid ACT, the ACT Law Society, Victim Support, Justices of the Peace, ACT Corrective Services, and others. There may even be a visit from our Court Support Canines! The exhibition will run from 1pm to 4pm.
  • Visitors can also join an educational court tour. Get an overview of the court and its history, and hear about what happens inside a court room. Tours will run every half hour from 1pm to 4pm – visitors can join in a tour on the day or book by emailing CourtsCommunications@courts.act.gov.au.
