Register your interest to join the Firearms Advisory Committee

The ACT Justice and Community Safety Directorate is calling for Expressions of Interest for appointment to the Firearms Advisory Committee as Chair of the Committee or Committee Member.

The role of the committee is to provide advice to the Minister for Police and Crime Prevention on:

  • the operation of the Firearms Act 1996 (the Act), regulations made under the Act and other related legislation, including making recommendations for improving their operation
  • Commonwealth, State and Territory firearms matters, including the National Firearms Agreement, to help inform the Minister’s position on national firearms issues
  • other matters related to firearms referred to the committee by the Minister.

The committee has a maximum of 10 members who will be appointed for three years and are expected to meet at least twice a year. Committee members can raise relevant matters regarding firearms at meetings of the committee, which is advisory in nature.

As a member you have the ability to provide considered and knowledgeable advice to the government on firearms and related legislation and to represent views of the firearms community. Committee members are not appointed as representatives of any particular organisation or special-interest group. Their function is to provide considered and knowledgeable advice to the Minister on firearms and related legislation.
