Justice Reinvestment and Reducing Recidivism Forum

On 5 and 6 December 2018, Minister for Justice Shane Rattenbury, MLA hosted a two-day national forum on Building Communities Not Prisons: Justice Reinvestment and Reducing Recidivism.

Internationally renowned academics, senior government officials from all states and territories, non-government organisations and community leaders come to Canberra to discuss the positive impact justice reinvestment can have on our Australian criminal justice systems and the work being done to reduce crime and change people’s pathways away from the justice system.

The Forum united national and international participants in driving the conversation about reducing recidivism and justice reinvestment in Australia.

The Forum was an opportunity for participants to discuss the emergence of justice reinvestment in the Australian criminal justice landscape. It supported discussion on leading initiatives that contribute to reducing recidivism. It provided opportunities for participants to share experiences about what is working in their communities with the aim of demonstrating how government working in partnership with community, academia and the private sector can develop approaches that reduce crime, improve public safety and strengthen communities.
